Cities play a crucial role in preventing and countering violent radicalisation. Recognising this, the final report of the High-Level Commission Expert Group on Radicalisation pointed to the need for local, multi-agency approaches to radicalisation, involving all relevant actors — local authorities, civil society organisations, social and youth workers, law enforcement and community police officers, mental health-care practitioners, among others. In order to move forward on this, the Cities against Radicalisation conference gathers together these relevant actors to allow them to exchange experiences and explore further initiatives.
The European Commission provides a platform for exchanges and supports cities in their efforts to build capacity to address radicalisation. The Commission also provides financial assistance to actors at the local level, through various funding instruments such as the Internal Security Fund (ISF) and Horizon 2020 (research funding).
